There’s an old wives’ tale that you can predict the severity of winter weather by cutting open a persimmon seed. If you see a knife shape inside it will be a cold, icy winter (the wind will cut through you like a knife). A fork shape means a mild winter. A spoon shape means you will need a shovel to dig out the snow.
Persimmons are widely available September through December. Get a recipe for persimmon and apple salad here.
